NDA (National Defence Academy) Exam – Complete Guide
NDA is the gateway for young aspirants who want to join the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force as an officer right after 12th class. The exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year (NDA-I and NDA-II). Upon selection, candidates undergo training at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla.
NDA Eligibility
Nationality: Indian citizen or subject of Nepal/Bhutan.
Age: 16.5 to 19.5 years.
Educational Qualification:
- For Army wing: 12th pass (any stream) from a recognized board.
- For Air Force & Navy wings: 12th pass with Physics and Mathematics.
Physical Standards: Candidates must meet height, weight, and vision standards as per army/navy/air force norms. Detailed medical examination is done at SSB.
NDA Exam Pattern
The written exam comprises two subjects: Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).

The GAT is further divided into English (200 marks) and General Knowledge (400 marks). General Knowledge covers Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, Current Events. The paper is objective type (multiple choice).
NDA Syllabus Highlights
Mathematics: Algebra, matrices, trigonometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, vector, statistics, probability, coordinate geometry (2D/3D), etc. (Class 11 & 12 level).
English: Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, error correction, synonyms-antonyms.
General Knowledge: Physics (laws of motion, electricity, optics), Chemistry (elements, compounds, acids‑bases), Biology (human body, plants), History (Indian freedom struggle, world wars), Geography (India & world physical), Polity (constitution), Current Affairs (last 6 months).
Selection Process (SSB Interview)
After clearing the written exam, candidates appear for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview which spans 5 days. It includes psychological tests, group testing officer tasks, and personal interview. Qualifying candidates undergo medical examination. Final merit is based on written + SSB marks.
NDA Training and Career
Selected candidates undergo 3 years of training at NDA, Khadakwasla (Pune), followed by 1 year at IMA (Army), INA (Navy), or AFA (Air Force). On completion, they are commissioned as officers. Salary during training is Rs. 56,100 per month (stipend). After commissioning, pay Level‑10 (Rs. 56,100 – 1,77,500) plus MSP and other allowances.
Preparation Tips for NDA
1. Stick to NCERT books of class 11‑12 for Mathematics and Sciences.
2. Practice previous year NDA papers – time yourself.
3. For GAT, daily read newspaper and current affairs compilation.
4. Improve English by reading novels/articles, solving grammar exercises.
5. Enroll in a good test series and physical fitness regimen.
