Indian Air Force Exams – Complete Guide

The Indian Air Force (IAF) offers a glamorous and challenging career for both officers and airmen. The selection is done through AFCAT, NDA, CDS, and direct recruitment rallies. Here you will find details about all IAF exams, eligibility, pattern, and top preparation strategies.

Officer Entry Exams

NDA (Air Force): UPSC exam after 12th with PCM. Training at National Defence Academy and Air Force Academy.

CDS (Air Force): Graduates (any stream, but Physics & Maths at 12th level) can apply via UPSC.

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test): For Flying branch, Ground Duty (Technical/Non‑Technical). Graduation/PG required. Two times a year.

NCC Special Entry: For NCC C Certificate holders (air wing).

Meteorology Entry: Post graduation in meteorology/science.

Airmen Entry (Group X & Y)

Group X (Technical): 12th pass with Maths, Physics, and English with 50% marks (or 3 years diploma). Age 17‑21. Written test, physical fitness, medical.

Group Y (Non‑Technical): 12th pass in any stream with 50% marks and English 50%. Age 17‑21. For Medical Assistant trade, Science with Biology required.

Group X & Y Combined: Candidates can appear for both, aspirants must meet both eligibility.

Air Force Exam Pattern

AFCAT: Online test – 100 questions, 300 marks, 2 hours. Sections: General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, Reasoning and Military Aptitude. For Flying branch, EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) also.

Airmen Group X: Written test – English, Physics, Mathematics as per 10+2 level. Duration 60 min, 70 questions.

Group Y: English and Reasoning & General Awareness. 50 questions, 45 min.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for Airmen

Candidates must complete 1.6 km run in 6 min 30 sec, 10 push‑ups, 10 sit‑ups, 20 squats. Medical standards are strict – height minimum 152.5 cm, proportionate weight, vision 6/6 or 6/9 as per trade.

Salary & Benefits in Indian Air Force

Flying Officers: Level‑10 pay (Rs. 56,100 – 1,77,500) plus flying allowance. Airmen: Level‑3 (Rs. 21,700 – 69,100) + MSP Rs. 5,200 + technical pay for group X. Free rations, accommodation, canteen facilities, 60 days annual leave, LTC, and pension after retirement.

How to Prepare for Air Force Exams

1. Strengthen 12th level Physics & Maths for Group X. Use HC Verma and RS Aggarwal.
2. For AFCAT, improve English vocabulary and comprehension, practice reasoning questions daily.
3. Solve previous year AFCAT and airmen papers.
4. Be physically active – run daily, do bodyweight exercises.
