Banking sector is one of the most attractive career options in India. Every year IBPS, SBI, RBI, and other banks recruit thousands of Probationary Officers (PO), Clerks, Specialist Officers, and Assistants. If you are aiming for a stable government job with good salary and rapid promotions, banking is the way to go.

Major Bank Exams in India

IBPS PO: Common recruitment for PSU banks (except SBI). Three stages: Prelims, Mains, Interview.

IBPS Clerk: For clerical cadre. Two stages: Prelims and Mains (no interview).

IBPS SO: Specialist Officers for IT, HR, Marketing, Law, Agriculture, etc.

SBI PO: State Bank of India Probationary Officer. Similar to IBPS PO but with separate exam and higher competition.

SBI Clerk: Junior Associate. Prelims + Mains + local language test.

RBI Grade B: Reserve Bank of India's officer level exam. Very prestigious. Phase‑I, Phase‑II, Interview.

RBI Assistant: Clerical level in RBI. Prelims, Mains, Language proficiency test.

NABARD Grade A & B: For agriculture and rural development fields.

Bank Exam Pattern

Most bank exams have a preliminary and main examination. Prelims usually consist of three sections: English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability (100 marks, 1 hour). Mains includes additional subjects like General/Economy/Banking Awareness, Computer Knowledge, and sometimes a Descriptive Test. The final selection involves an interview (except Clerk).

Syllabus Highlights

Reasoning: Puzzles, seating arrangement, inequalities, syllogism, blood relations, direction sense, input‑output, coding‑decoding.

Quantitative Aptitude: Data interpretation, simplification, number series, quadratic equations, arithmetic (percentage, profit loss, time & work, speed distance).

English: Reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, error detection, fillers, vocabulary.

General Awareness: Current affairs (last 6 months), banking terms, RBI policies, economic survey, budget, static banking.

Computer Knowledge: Basics of computer, MS Office, internet, networking, hardware, software.

Salary in Banking Sector

IBPS PO basic pay is Rs. 36,000 (plus DA, HRA, etc.) total in‑hand around Rs. 52,000–60,000 per month. SBI PO gets higher perks. Clerks start with Rs. 19,900 basic, in‑hand Rs. 30,000–35,000. RBI Grade B officers get Rs. 77,000+ in‑hand. All have pension under NPS, medical, leave, and other allowances.

Preparation Strategy

1. Clear fundamentals from standard books (RS Aggarwal for reasoning, Arun Sharma for quant).
2. Read newspaper daily (The Hindu, Economic Times).
3. Take weekly mock tests and analyze mistakes.
4. Focus on speed – use shortcut tricks for quant and reasoning.
5. For descriptive writing, practice essays on banking and economy topics.
